Here, I’m looking at this strictly from a user’s perspective. Before you decide, ask yourself a few basic questions:

- Is your audience open to using AI?
- Is it a formal, informal, or closed-door meeting?
- What is your budget?
Once you answer these, the choice becomes much clearer.
Human SI: The Gold Standard for Nuance
Human interpreters bring authenticity, cultural nuance, and accountability. They take responsibility for their work and excel at adapting to cultural contexts, shifting tones, and spontaneous room dynamics.
They remain the standard choice for high-level conferences, mission-critical discussions, arbitration hearings, and sensitive, high-stakes events.
Does this mean AI can’t be used in these settings? Not necessarily—but it depends heavily on whether you and your audience are ready to embrace it.
AI SI: The Technical Ecosystem
AI interpretation removes the need for sourcing and managing human interpreter schedules, saving significant time and cost. However, it swaps out human management for precise technical orchestration.
To get an ideal, high-quality output from an AI system, you need an expert technical configuration. It comes down to three essentials:
- Optimized Audio Capture – Because speakers are on stage or using push-to-talk mics in a live room, you can’t rely on perfect acoustic isolation. Success depends on using the right professional microphones and hardware to capture the speaker’s voice clearly right at the source.
- Expert Audio Engineering & Tuning – This is where the tech specialist is crucial. You cannot just feed raw room audio into an AI engine. A skilled technician needs to actively tune the feed—using gating, equalization, and technical tweaks to filter out background noise and room ambiance—ensuring a crystal-clear, optimized audio signal is delivered straight to the software.
- Custom Software Tuning (Glossaries & TM) – AI requires active preparation before the event even starts. Injecting the platform with a pre-loaded translation memory and custom glossary (loaded with names, acronyms, and industry-specific terms) drastically improves consistency and prevents the AI from guessing.
When these pillars—correct hardware, professional audio engineering, and tailored software configuration—are locked in, AI SI can deliver excellent results at a fraction of the cost.
⚠️ One major limitation: AI still struggles significantly when speakers mix multiple languages within the same sentence (code-switching). When this happens, the output often becomes incoherent.
Evaluating Accuracy
Neither option is a magic bullet; both require oversight.
- With human interpreters, credentials matter, but so does domain expertise. You need to ensure their background aligns perfectly with the specific subject matter of your event.
- With AI platforms, the underlying algorithm matters. Because different tools use different engines, the quality will vary. You can significantly mitigate AI’s common weak point—proper nouns and names—by pre-loading a custom glossary into the software.
When AI Has the Definite Edge
AI interpretation shines brightest in last-minute or massive, multi-lingual scenarios.
The Scenario: You have an overseas event in two days that requires interpretation into 12 different languages.
To do this with human SI, you would need to secure 24 interpreters (two per language for breaks), book last-minute flights, handle complex logistics, and hope they are available. Realistically, it’s a logistical nightmare.
In cases like this, AI interpretation isn’t just a budget-friendly choice—it’s the only viable solution.
